"There's no place like home for the __________." "Happy __________!" "So, do you have any special plans for the __________ this year?"

Chances are you didn't have any trouble filling in those blanks with the word "holidays". What might give someone in our society a little more trouble would be to follow up with some questions of our own: "What holidays are you referring to?" and "What exactly makes those days holy?"

The first question will probably be answered with something like, "Uh, I guess Thanksgiving, and Christmas." The second question will likely get some hemming or hawing, or maybe a blank look - if not anger - because we've largely forgotten two things: First, that the original meaning of "holiday" is, in fact, "holy day"; and second, that Thanksgiving and Christmas are festivals intended for worship - times to focus on Who and what is holy.

Between the football and reindeer games, the family feasts and fights, the turkey and the tinsel, it's easy to lose sight of this. And with Thanksgiving being overtaken more and more every year by "Black Friday" - a day there's apparently nothing holy about, though it is "sacred" to many shoppers and retailers - there is little time for reflection or meditation in the month or so before Christmas.

But there should be. Thanksgiving's purpose is giving thanks - not to other people but to the Lord who has blessed us richly every day of the year. Advent - the forgotten season of preparation - is meant to focus our hearts and minds on the coming of our Savior. And Christmas itself is emptied of its true meaning and joy if presents and parties crowd out the Christ-child. We need - our faith needs - to ponder and wonder at all God's gifts, especially the gift of his Son to save us, and respond with worship that befits a King most wonderful and generous.

So let's keep the holidays holy this and every year. Join your brothers and sisters here for worship, make the extra effort to spend time with your devotions, despite the crowding of your busy schedule, and feast on the good news of God's grace. Make these your special plans for these special days.
